Beavers (6–8)

Meeting Time: Mondays, 6-7pm

Beavers are the youngest members of our Scout group, aged 6-8 years, and meet in groups called Colonies. Each Colony is made up of young people aged 6 to 8, led by an adult Beaver leader. Other adult volunteers are on hand to supervise activities, share their skills and keep everyone safe.

Every Monday we get together for one hour in our Colony to have fun and work towards badges. Going to Beavers is very different from going to school. Instead of learning from books, we figure the world out by exploring, playing and doing. Each week we work towards a themed badge, with many to earn. Here are some of the things we get up to:

Exploring the great outdoors

Beavers spend lots of time outside when the weather is good. We are frequent visitors to Peckham Rye Park, with access to the nature garden. In the park we go on nature walks, try our hand at sending messages using signals, navigate using tracking signs on paths and play games in the open space.

Beavers

Working in Teams

We start and finish each session together as a group and play team games and overcome leader set challenges. Beavers might be working together to build the tallest spaghetti tower, the most buoyant lego ship or send a paper place on the longest flight.

Beavers

Life skills

Whilst having fun, we like to extend our horizons and learn new things. We might use cookery to explore traditions and cultures or learn the basics of looking after one another with the Beavers tending to first aid scenarios.

Beavers

Experimentation

The mysteries of the world are explored through experimentation. We have tested the power of magnetism, putting it work and experimented with light and colour.

How to join

Lots of young people want to join Beavers and you might have to wait for a space to become available before you can start your journey. If you have any questions about accessibility, it’s best to contact us in addition to your application. By being upfront about additional needs from the start, parents/carers can work in partnership with local leaders to make sure their young person has the best experience possible.

On your first night at Beavers, you’ll be taking part in lots of activities, and should just wear something you feel comfortable in.

Eventually, you’ll get your own Beaver uniform to wear to meetings and on trips and nights away. Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means no one feels uncomfortable or left out and helps everyone to feel a part of the Colony. It also gives you a place to show off all the Beaver badges you earn.

For Beavers, the uniform consists of a blue sweatshirt with your badges sewn on and a coloured scarf to represent your local group. Uniform can either be bought from the online shop – Scout Store – or from a local supplier. If you’re not sure where to start, adult volunteers can give you more information about what to buy and where to buy it. We sometimes have second-hand uniforms on sale so make sure you ask.
